THE AXE HEAD

TEXT: 2 KINGS 6:5–6 NKJV

[5] But as one was cutting down a tree, the iron axe head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, “Alas, master! For it was borrowed.” [6] So the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And he showed him the place. So he cut off a stick, and threw it in there; and he made the iron float.

Discussion

The devotional topic was taken from a popular story in the Bible. The sons of the prophets had borrowed an axe, and while they were using it, the axe head fell into the river. They had to call on their master for help because they did not know what to do.

There are situations in our lives where we have tried everything we know to do, yet all our efforts seem abortive. The servants realised that they had done all they could, but because there was no solution, they called on the man of God. Shame was knocking at the door because the axe had been borrowed. There are some important lessons we can learn from this story:

1. Seek a solution:
Many people run away from difficult situations. They choose to abandon them, make excuses, or begin the blame game. Instead, the servants ran to where they knew the solution was rather than saying, “What will be, will be.” As Christians, we must remain with God until we see Him turn every difficult situation around.

2. Answer rightly :
The man of God asked, “Where did the axe head fall?” Many times, God speaks, but because of the magnitude of our situation, we fail to hear Him. Some people are busy weeping while God is giving them instructions.

3. The stick made the iron float:
The solution to their problem came in an unexpected way because God was involved. Humanly speaking, it is impossible for a stick to make iron float, but with God, all things are possible. The moment Elisha cut the stick and threw it into the river, the power of God worked through that simple act. The stick went into the river, located the axe head, and caused it to float. Even the law of flotation could not stop God.

Is there any situation in your life that seems impossible? I have come today to let you know that God will step into that situation, and you shall have a testimony in Jesus name.

Declarations:

God shall step into my situation, and I shall not experience shame, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
