THE LORD IS MY HELPER

TEXT: PSALM 121:1–2 NKJV

[1] I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? [2] My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

Discussion

Hope you had a great time in church today. Today’s devotional focuses on help from the Lord. Our God is always eager to help His children when we lift up our eyes to Him. The psalmist in today’s Bible text said something very significant. He declared, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills.” This means he lifted his eyes to the mountains, the highest places on earth, seeking help. However, he realised that his help could only come from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, including the highest places of the earth.

The question is: What comes to your mind first when you need help? Many times, we look to people for help and forget that God is the primary source of our help. The problem with relying on people first is that they may expect something in return or even use your situation against you in the future. With God, however, you can come openly and confidently, without fear. God’s help can come through different means.

God can use animals to help (1 Kings 17:6). He can send an angel (1 Kings 19:5–7). He can also use human beings, just as He did for Elijah through the widow (1 Kings 17:10). When God chooses to help someone, He can use anyone or anything.

Today’s devotional encourages us to go to God first for help before turning to people. There is a great difference between God directing someone to help you and you seeking help from people on your own. It is better for God to send someone to help you than for you to go about asking for help. However, we should also remember that God may direct us to seek help from the very people He has prepared to assist us.

The purpose of today’s message is not to say that we should never ask others for help when we need it. Rather, we should go to God first, and He will direct us to the right person or people who can help us.

Declarations:

I shall call upon the Lord, and He shall answer me. The Lord is my Helper.
