TEXT: GENESIS 3:6 NKJV
[6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Discussion
Today’s devotional is based on the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. God gave them clear instructions regarding what they could and could not eat in the garden. He permitted them to eat from every tree except one.
It is amazing that they may not even have tasted all the different kinds of fruit in the garden, yet the only tree they were forbidden to eat from became the one that attracted them the most. Man fell into the devil’s temptation because of Satan’s deception. Our objective today is to understand the basis of their fall and learn an important lesson from it.
Mummy Eve saw that the forbidden fruit was good for food. The problem began with what she saw, which then gave birth to imagination. The forbidden tree had been in the garden all along, but because she had not paid much attention to it, she was safe. The moment she fixed her attention on the fruit, Satan knew exactly how to approach her and entice her to disobey God.
The reason many Christians repeatedly fall into sin is that the stronghold built through their imagination has not been broken.
Some things may be good to eat, yet they are not meant to be our food as children of God. We must be careful about what we give our attention to, especially the things we see around us that appear attractive but do not deserve our focus.
The eyes are a very important part of our body. However, when we allow corruption to gain entrance into our hearts through what we see, it can build a stronghold of iniquity that continues to operate even when the object is no longer before our eyes.
Do you realise that many disturbing things we may have seen years ago can still be replayed vividly in our minds? This is because our eyes connect with our imagination, and our imagination can reproduce those images almost exactly as we first saw them.
Brethren, let us make sure we guard the gate of our eyes because, if it is not properly guarded, we will open our hearts to evil imaginations. Some things may appear good, but they are not meant to be our food.
