TEXT: HEBREWS 12:1 KJV
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, ”
Discussion
Today, we shall look inward into our daily spiritual walk with God and also examine our spiritual lives personally. Our Bible text today gives us an exercise: to lay aside every weight and the sin which easily ensnares us.
Apostle Paul categorized the things that easily beset us into two parts: weight and sin. Most believers know about sin, and we try to avoid sin as God helps us daily, but we do not talk much about weights.
Sin and weight have one singular mission: to stop us from making it to heaven. A weight may not be a sin at the initial stage, but if it is not dealt with, it can become a great hindrance to our heavenly journey. Weights are like burdens that slow us down from moving at God’s pace. They are unwanted or unnecessary things to which we give our attention, even though they are totally outside the script God has written for us.
If Satan fails to get a believer to sin, he tries to get the believer by giving him or her weights. These weights can eventually lead to sin if they are not quickly identified and dealt with. Solomon refers to such things as “little foxes that ruin the vine.”
There are things that are arranged by our adversaries in the journey of eternity to slow us down and make us lose focus. Hence, we shall consider some of these weights. I pray that the Lord shall give us victory over these weights, and that from today, we shall be able to fly easily without carrying unnecessary burdens.
We shall talk about three of these weights:
1) Overeating : This is when we eat too much. It is the desire to satisfy the belly by overloading the body with excessive food. If we follow the example of how God fed Elijah at the brook Cherith, two square meals should be enough for every human being (1 Kings 17:6). If we eat too much, fasting may become difficult, and there are some battles that can only be defeated through fasting.
2) Oversleeping : Everybody has a certain number of hours of sleep needed for the body to function properly. We need to understand our bodies and know how many hours of sleep we need. We can also train our bodies not to have more sleep than necessary. If we sleep too much, it may become difficult to pray at night. Praying at night was a major part of Jesus Christ’s ministry (Luke 6:12).
3) Distraction : This is a major weight in this generation. The devil is looking for anything that will capture our attention. We need to be very careful with our use of social media and other things that can easily distract us from what truly matters in life.
As a believer, the algorithm of our social media may not contain anything sinful, but it can keep us stuck for hours, laughing away the time God has given us.
Declarations:
I shall not allow any weight to stop me from making it to heaven. I receive the grace to lay aside every weight and sin, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
