TEXT: MICAH 3:11 NKJV
[11] The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.
Discussion
Today’s devotional focuses on our motives as we serve God, especially in our ministerial assignments. Our Bible text today warns us to examine our motives and ensure they are right as we engage in God’s service.
The Scripture says that the heads judge for a reward, the priests teach for hire, and the prophets divine for money. God is indeed a rewarder of those who diligently serve Him, and throughout the Scriptures we have seen how He rewards people for their faithfulness.
However, our focus should not be on the reward but on the assignment. We must focus more on God’s assignment than on the reward we receive from Him. The benefit of focusing on the assignment is that God Himself rewards the individual.
Reward does not refer only to physical blessings; it also includes the eternal reward we receive for doing what God has called us to do.
As servants of God, we should remember that our work for Him is a sacrifice we offer to Him and not merely a job. This does not mean that ministers of the gospel should not be paid, but the Holy Spirit within us will guide us and convict us whenever our motives begin to go astray.
Therefore, today’s Bible text does not speak against being paid for doing God’s work; rather, it warns against allowing our hearts to focus on the pay instead of the assignment.
