TEXT: ACTS 13:22 KJV
[22] But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’
Discussion
Today’s devotional focuses on God’s will coming to fulfilment. Our Bible text talks about a popular Bible character, King David, whom God called a man after His own heart, who would fulfil all His will.
I used to think that being a man after God’s heart meant being a man whom God loves, but I discovered that the interpretation I gave it was incomplete. The reason David was a man after God’s heart is that he always wanted to know and do what was in the mind of God. David desired to know and do God’s will above his own desires.
Doing the will of God is so important that Jesus Christ gave us a template for prayer in Matthew 6:10: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
God is looking for men and women after His heart, like David. God wants people who will fulfil His will on earth. God is looking for someone who is not only focused on their own will, but someone who believes that God has a will and a purpose that must somehow be fulfilled while we are alive.
God knows that we are dust (Psalm 103:14), so we cannot please Him by our own righteousness, but only through the righteousness of Jesus Christ.
However, He wants someone who can say, “THY WILL BE DONE, O LORD.” David became a man after God’s heart, not because he was a man without faults, but because he was a man who pursued God’s desires and was eager to fulfil them.
God wants us to be perfect, but He is not necessarily looking for a perfect person to use. Rather, He is looking for someone who is willing to do His divine will, someone He can purge, refine, purify, and ultimately glorify.
Brethren, make up your mind today to always fulfil God’s will for your life. That is the purpose for which you are here on earth.
