Today’s devotional reminds us of God’s power to lift people up and His power to bring anyone down. The Almighty God rules over all, both the high and the low. Our Bible text today is a testimony from David about who the Lord is. No one can receive anything unless it comes from God. Man may think he is powerful, but in reality, no one is truly powerful except the Almighty God. He decides who is to be lifted up and who is to be brought down.
Take David, for example. He was the youngest son of Jesse. Humanly speaking, he did not look like someone who would become king over Israel. Yet God found him at the backside of the wilderness and raised him to be king over Israel after God rejected Saul. God, the lifter of men, took Joseph from the pit to Potiphar’s house, from Potiphar’s house to prison, and from prison to the palace.
Today’s devotional reminds us to keep our gaze on the Lord, not on man. Our help comes from the Lord, not from man. Our trust should not be in the system, but in God. Our help is not ultimately in the hands of relatives or friends. Our trust is not in man or woman, but in God. We must trust God and God alone for our lifting.
Jeremiah made it clear when the Lord said:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord.” — Jeremiah 17:5
The secret to being lifted up is to humble ourselves before the Lord.
Matthew 23:12 says, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
If the secret to being lifted up is humility, then God lifts up the humble and brings down the proud. We humble ourselves before God by surrendering completely to Jesus and withholding nothing from Him.
There is someone reading this devotional who shall be lifted beyond his or her imagination (Ephesians 3:20). God shall send you help this week, and you shall have a testimony, in Jesus’ name.
Declarations:
I shall humble myself, and the Lord shall lift me up. I shall look unto the Lord alone, and He shall lift me up. I shall not exalt myself before the Lord, in Jesus’ name.
