He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

Today’s devotional focuses on how we should position ourselves before God. John the Baptist made this statement in our Bible text today when his disciples told him about Jesus baptising people.
John knew that the people were trying to put him in trouble by comparing him with Jesus, so he gave a response that silenced them. He said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”
There is a lesson to learn from this. When people start praising you for your achievements, always remember to return the glory to God, the Giver of all things. Herod got into trouble when the people said, “The voice of a god, and not of a man” (Acts 12:22).
Many times, we forget that we are nothing but instruments in the hands of our Creator. God blesses us with amazing things such as money, influence, power, and so on, and then we begin to think that we can do anything without Him.
I would like to give an example I coined from Pastor E. A. Adeboye (Daddy G.O.) that should not be forgotten easily. There are two important figures in mathematics: 1 and 0. These numbers are very important.
Let us say:
0 represents nothing.
1 represents something.
We can also use them to represent man and God. Let 0 represent man and 1 represent God.
If 0 comes before 1, it becomes 01, which has little value. In other words, if you put yourself first before God, you have little value. But if 1 comes before 0, it becomes 10, which has a greater value. This teaches us that when we put God first, we achieve greater results.
When we think we can achieve things by our own strength, we decrease and accomplish nothing of lasting value. But when we look unto Jesus and give Him the glory for all He is doing in our lives, He increases while we decrease.
It is a terrible thing to put ourselves before God. It is a sign that we are relying on ourselves rather than depending on Him. God did not create man to be dependent on himself. God created man to be independently dependent on Him for exploits.
There are two things in life that we must always remember and avoid:
1. Arrogance against God
2. Pride
These two can turn God’s back against someone. If you don’t believe me, ask Lucifer.
May we always remember that without God, we are nothing. May He help us to decrease so that He can increase in our lives. To God alone be all the glory. Amen.
