TEXT: Mark 4:5–6, 16–17
[5]And some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. [6] But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
[16] These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; [17] and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when affliction or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.
Discussions:
Yesterday, we began discussing the parable of the sower. The second category of people Jesus talked about are those who hear the word of God but never allow it to take root in them. I have realized that the word of God is very easy to teach, but it takes discipline to live by it. For you to benefit from the word of God, it must go beyond merely reading or hearing. Faith grows through hearing and continued hearing of the word.
If you hear or read the word of God just for the sake of it, that word will have no root in you. When the challenges of life come, such Christians fall away.
The following spiritual activities will allow the word to take root:
1. Study the word—do not just read it (reflect on it).
2. Meditate on the word of God.
3. Speak the word of God daily and apply it to relevant circumstances and situations.
4. Memorize the word of God—either one verse a week or a month.
5. Study with others (join a group)—this helps you stay rooted in faith with fellow believers.
Declarations:
The word of God shall take root in my life in Jesus name.
