TEXT: MATTHEW 6:20 NKJV
[20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
The devotional today focuses on our eternity. The Bible text above shows us that there is a place where our treasures can be kept safe apart from this earth.
The objective of this teaching from Jesus is to encourage us to prepare for eternity rather than focus solely on things on earth. He emphasized that the treasures to which we give all our attention on earth can be stolen or destroyed, but the treasures we lay up in heaven are secure.
This means that no one gets to heaven by accident. Anyone who is heaven-conscious must plan and prepare by laying up treasures there.
The story of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1–13 explains that planning and preparation are important if we are to make it to heaven.
The treasure Jesus was talking about does not mean money or gold. He was asking us to ensure that our hearts are more focused on the things of heaven. Though we live in the world, we are not of this world. If a man has all the money in the world but has no record in heaven, that is a great loss.
These treasures include:
1. Our submission and surrender to God — Matthew 16:25
2. Our life of holiness and obedience — Hebrews 12:14
3. Our sacrifice toward the things of God — this could mean sacrificing our time, energy, and money.
It looks like the coming of Jesus Christ for His saints is nearer than we think. All the signs of His return written in Scripture seem to be fulfilled. Brethren, may the Lord help us to be ready, in Jesus’ name.
Declarations:
I shall lay up for myself treasures in heaven, in Jesus’ name
