[6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Discussion
We shall continue with our discussion on temptation. It was established that temptation is not inevitable for Christians, but our response when we face temptation determines whether we will be victorious or not.
Our Bible text from yesterday shows that Eve was tempted by the devil, and she fell. We shall move further to see the next phase of Eve’s fall. Eve saw that the tree was desirable for gaining wisdom. This is when someone begins to become inquisitive about things that are immoral i.e wanting to find out more about something you are not even meant to have any knowledge about. Eve wanted to be wise. She wanted to gain wisdom from a source that was corrupted.
For example, if you see an illicit video online by mistake, instead of closing the website, you now begin to find out: Who posted this video? How many such videos does he upload? How many views does the video have? Who are his followers? How much is this video compared to others? You see that, gradually, Satan traps the person in that web.
We must run away from things that seem or look like evil. It is not wise to try to educate ourselves about such things. Nine out of ten people who become addicted to things they are not meant to engage in started by trying to satisfy their curiosity about things they should have run away from.
Also, another important lesson to learn from Eve is that most people who fall into temptation often look for others to put in the same situation, either knowingly or unknowingly. They try to justify their actions by bringing more people into the same circumstance. Eve ate the fruit and also gave some to her husband, so she was not the only one in the problem.
This is why we must be sensitive to the things around us so that we do not fall into sin as a result of association or pity.
I will also say that when you advise people, or when you are in a position where people narrate their ordeals with secret sins to you, you must not give room for people to confess their sins to you in detail. Let them spare you the details and avoid giving you too much information about their fall, because you need to guard your heart against such detailed information. The Holy Spirit can hear the whole detail; we do not need to know everything, because you might find yourself falling into the same thing if care is not taken.
Declarations:
The Lord shall deliver me from temptation. I shall not fall into temptation by association, in Jesus’ name. The Lord shall help me daily.
