Discussion
Today, we shall discuss the cleansing of our souls as believers in Jesus Christ. The exercise of cleansing our souls is our responsibility.
Romans 12:2 refers to this exercise as the renewing of the mind; that is, we must do this continually and not as a one-off exercise. This process of daily renewal is also referred to as sanctification. It is like washing your soul (Ephesians 5:26).
Today’s Bible text says that we are clean through the Word. There are two parts to the salvation/deliverance process. The first is the part accomplished through the blood of Jesus, which we did nothing to obtain. It is the perfect work of the cross. Jesus died, our sins were washed away, and we became born again in Christ.
The second part is where we take responsibility for keeping our souls clean and nourished by God’s Word. If we believe in the first part of salvation – that is, confess our sins and washed by the blood of Jesus but do not take responsibility for cleansing our souls, we will become vulnerable to going back to the things we used to do.
We shall focus more on our responsibility in today’s discussion.
The Word of God cleanses our souls from iniquity. For us, whether we are new or old believers, we must constantly read the Bible (God’s Word) daily. Anything spiritual, no matter how good it looks, that does not lead you back to God’s Word is not good for you.
Every spiritual activity comes from God’s Word, so there is nothing else that should be more important to us than God’s Word.
I have discovered that the more of God’s Word you open your soul to, the less your soul will wander into evil thoughts. Do you know that when we sleep, we have no control over our souls? However, if our souls are cleansed and filled with God’s Word, you don’t have to worry when you sleep because God is in charge.
I recommend that, apart from your usual daily Bible study, it is a good practice to read a verse or two from the Bible before falling asleep every night.
This will benefit someone today. If you wake up from a bad dream or a corrupt or immoral dream, don’t panic.
Practical Steps
1. Cover your soul, spirit, and body with the blood of Jesus.
2. Cancel any implication of such dreams or thoughts with the blood of Jesus.
3. Study your Bible as part of your regular routine; that is, follow a systematic Bible-reading program.
4. Establish relevant Scriptures in your life through prayer.
5. Forget the evil dream.
6. Repeat steps 1, 3, and 4.
As believers, we must make up our minds that no day must pass without reading or listening to God’s Word. That is the secret to being cleansed from the corruption of this world.
