TEXT: JOHN 13:29 NKJV
[29] For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
Discussion
Today’s devotional focuses on our daily lives as children of God. The text today describes a situation when Judas was on his way to betray Jesus. The other disciples assumed that Jesus had sent him on an errand, but they did not know that he was taking steps towards destruction.
It is very important that we live our lives based on truth and not on assumptions. Many wrong assumptions have destroyed friendships, homes, and even good relationships among children of God. The Bible admonishes us to examine everything carefully and hold on to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
However, it is very pathetic that Judas was taking his first steps towards betrayal and destruction, yet some of the disciples thought he was going either to prepare for the feast or to give something to the poor. They made not just one assumption, but two totally different assumptions.
Many times, you greet some people, but their minds may be far away. They may be dealing with something in their minds, yet we assume that they were being rude because they did not respond properly to our greetings.
Instead of making assumptions, we can pray about everything. Some people make wrong assumptions by bringing Judas into their homes, thinking they have brought in a friend. We cannot assume that all is well when all is not well, or that all is not well when everything is actually fine.
In the case of Jesus, He knew that Judas was going to betray Him. John 4:18 says that He knew those whom He had chosen.
Our Christian lives require a high level of sensitivity and assurance of the truth. For example, we cannot simply assume that heaven is real; we must find out the truth in His word and hold firmly to it. May the Lord help us as we walk with Him daily, so that we may establish His truth in us every day, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
